Christmas Parties – the dreaded weight gain!

I know most people find this time of year difficult to watch what they eat with all the Christmas parties and large amounts of tempting food on offer.

For the first time in my life I’m actually not craving the usual high calorie food that is served at Christmas parties. In the past I used to love this time of year because I got to eat lots of yummy food which was not so good for me.

This year has been a big one for me and when I reflect back I can see how much I’ve changed with my lifestyle. I’ve learnt so much about nutrition; as a result my diet is very different now to what it was 12 months ago. I suspect that by this by time next year I will have found more new ways that I can improve my personal development and growth. Continue reading

Winning at Business

These days I have so much stamina, and I credit that to my excellent health. At 47, I don’t feel my age at all and sometimes I think: ‘Wow I am kind of getting old’, and yet I’m able to be so active and I don’t have any medical problems going on as yet! I really don’t feel my age these days and believe I am a lot healthier now than I was in my 30’s.

I’m pretty sure I would have gone down a bad health path if I had continued to eat the way I was eating and persisted with my past unhealthy habits. One of the big benefits of being healthy is that it has given me the stamina and strength to run my business and stay at the cutting edge.

Respect to Daran Pratt

I wanted to write something about Daran my trainer, who passed away on the 23rd June, 2011. It was a day of shock, loss and sadness for the fitness world and his beloved wife Trin. Trin and Daran worked hard together at their Gym; they spent weekends and late nights working on the Gym, working out fitness plans, and Daran had a zillion other projects on the go, each with its own potential, he didn’t know that time was against him.

I had the pleasure of also training with Trin and would like to say she is an amazing woman who is very inspirational to me.

Daran had given me the inspiration to start my exercise and fitness journey. When I first went to Daran for training he told me “You can do it.” and was supportive as he worked me hard and pushed me to a level of fitness that motivated me and continues to motivate me now. He told me I could do it and from where I was standing at that point I’d thought “He has to be kidding.” Initially I didn’t believe I could ever become fit because the end result seemed so far away for me. He was right I did do it!

Getting Protein into Your Diet

I used to think protein drinks were a waste of time and very unnatural, as I maintain a strong focus on raw organic eating. A lot of personal trainers and other people told me to increase my protein intake and as I’m not a big fan of meat, I realised that my protein intake was actually quite low. I’d also noticed that although I was training really hard, I wasn’t getting the muscle definition I wanted.

I found many websites with all kinds of information about protein and how it can increase muscle and strip fat. I have learnt so much about food, exercise and lots of information on well-being; however I still feel I’ve only just scratched the surface. I sometimes feel confused when I find conflicting information. One nutritionist will say don’t eat this and others will tell you that it’s okay eat the same food. I figured I would introduce protein shakes into my diet for a month to see what, if anything, would happen.

What are empty calories?

Once you hit your ideal weight, the pressure is on to maintain it…now this is not always easy because the temptation to just lash out is always there. Cravings seem to come into your mind more often now than when you were watching what you were eating.

I find social situations hard, because most people have a few alcoholic drinks and eat cheese, biscuits, chips, finger food and lots of high calorie treats. These days I’m really mindful of what I eat and tend to eat before I go out, so the impact of empty calories is reduced…I can’t honestly say I’m strict, however I’m so much better than I was. I go for vegetable sticks and healthy alternatives as much as I can, but the temptation is always there…then I think of the hard slog I had to go through and I slap myself around mentally …which helps keep me on track.

Dairy Milk Alternative

I have read a lot about how bad dairy milk is with the high cholesterol levels; if milk is low fat then there is a high amount of sugar that is added which is just as bad. So what do you do? I have never been a fan of cow’s milk because it gives me an unpleasant feeling in my stomach.

When do you stop losing weight?

I’ve been doing a lot of research trying to find out what is the correct healthy weight for my height, build and age. I still haven’t found a definite answer – usually there is an 8 – 10 kg weight range which makes a big difference in body shape.

Do I go for the lowest number in my ideal weight range or do I go for the highest – or perhaps somewhere in the middle is the correct weight for me? It would make things a lot easier if someone could correctly nominate the ideal weight for each individual.

Shopping is now Joyful

I remember how much I hated to go shopping for clothes when I was overweight. I used every excuse not to go shopping much to my daughter’s disappointment. The reality for me was that I hated trying on clothes with people around because most clothes didn’t fit well or looked bad on me. So I developed this baggy tomboyish look and got away with it because I am a computer geek. The look seemed to work for my web design profession so I was able to get away with it and did not have to deal with my own personal issues of low self esteem. Working at home also made it easier for me to look awful; although these days I couldn’t get away with it.

Changing to an organic diet

What is organic food? Organic foods are grown traditionally in a natural environment without the use of pesticides or herbicides and have a higher nutrient value than conventionally grown crops. These methods are more time consuming and costly to produce whilst yielding less than modern mass production farming techniques.

I have made the choice as a consumer to support organic farmers by purchasing organic produce whenever available and as my budget allows.

Must See DVD’s

These DVD’s have had a big affect on what I’m eating and have been very inspirational, awakening and have given me an awareness of healthy eating. I also want to say that all of these links are directly to the website of the producers or suppliers.

I am not on a commission or a reseller of any of these DVD’s. This article is a list of some of the films I’ve watched so far. Buy some and start learning for yourself, then you can make your own informed decisions about what you eat.
